New landscaping

I'm later posting today as my youngest kiddo was up in the night with a belly bug. Never fun. I guess the season of germs and sickness has already begun - ugh!

But I'd been meaning, for a while now, to get to my landscaping photos so I could edit them a bit and show you what was accomplished for this year. We have more plans for next year, but the company that did our job got to it very late summer (really more like early Fall), so some thing will have to wait. They did an excellent job and we were very happy with their work!  They will be back in the Spring to finish another side of the house and some other small projects. But I'm excited to show you what was accomplished so far!  Get ready as it's a photo loaded post. Grab your hot tea or cider and snuggle in and hope you enjoy.

My daughter and her friend last Halloween (Annie was the Eiffel Tower). Here's a pic of the old gray pavers that were part of the front door patio area when we bought the house. They were old and faded and lots of grassy areas had started to grow in between them.

Here are some more photos from last Halloween time to give you a general idea about the front of our house and how our landscaping was then. I love how you can see in the 2nd photo how lovely it looks after my hubby leaf blows. The problem is until ALL the leaves are down off the trees it will go back to looking like the 3rd photo within an hour. Lol

Last year we had a new roof put on (needed it badly) and we did stone on the chimney to match the stone we had put on the lower part of the house. Our house formerly had 1970's looking orange, brown and yellow brick. We changed it to the stone to give it more of the lake cottage home we were going for.

Here's another look at the old gray front patio pavers.

the mess...er I mean the progress begins - here they were starting on our new paver path.

These are photos of the new pavers before they had the filler (sand like grout) added in between.

They took out the old shrubs, as some were dead and the rest overgrown. Time to start fresh.

When my hubby and I first moved here we about 9 years ago we changed some landscaping ourselves and planted many new shrubs then. We did a mulch type filler. But over the years we started having such ant problems that we had an exterminator come last summer. He told us the carpenter ants loved our mulch. So mulch go bye bye and now we picked this river rock for filler.

You can see in this before pic (do you like our spooky eyes last halloween? they even lit up. Lol) how my hubby and I had made retaining walls in the front with stone bricks that matched our house stone. The landscape expert told us he thought we should remove these, as they weren't really retaining anything....and with the new path he would put down it would have a nice wide border on each side and would make it look cleaner. I'm glad we listened to him as I like the result much better as you can see in next photo.

some of this is wet look right after shrubs were watered.

These photos are of that same front window area with the new shrubs, new stone, and new path. To the left is where they planted new grass seed and covered with straw.  New shrubs along with flowering plants of bleeding heart (3 of them) and 2 hydrangea.

We have a really large round black topped driveway that sits higher than the path - so the landscaper came up with taking some of our stone bricks and turning them sideways and creating this step down. My hubby wants to one day cement concrete our whole driveway, which would look amazing but I hope he finds a money tree soon.  Lol! This photo is from before it was filled in with the sand like grout. My hubby and I really liked this step idea and have a plan for the back now that I'll share later in the post.

Here's the right front side of the house last Halloween (notice brick retaining wall and old overgrown shrubs etc)

Here is the after with new stone, and newly watered golden barberry bushes.

Here is the old overgrown gray paver path that led to the back of the house.

Here is the new path. I love the colors of it and I love the light border on each side. It was the end of their season and the landscaper didn't have shrubs for this area that he wanted to use (something with more height) so he will be adding to this next Spring.  We were also impressed with the landscapers as they cleaned out our gutters and put new piping (you can see behind the hydrangea) and ran new lines under the path so there is proper drainage.

Here is Annie's old garden outside her bedroom window. It was square shape and we had stairs that ran right from the deck down to the dock. A billion heart pumping stairs. Lol

All of the stairs have been taken out. They needed to round the path to make it meet the deck correctly so they changed the shape of Annie's garden a bit.

We need to build new stairs back up to the deck on this side, but I love the job they did on her garden.

They planted something to bloom for each season so it will always have something colorful through the year (other than winter). I know there is azalea in there, but not sure of the names of the rest.

At first Annie wasn't sure if she liked this new view out her window, but once we added a few of her fairy houses and other buddies she fell back in love.

Her Felix the frog statue saying hi in this view from her window.

Our old stairs would peel constantly and were a lot of upkeep. We decided to be drastic and really change things so we tore the majority of them out.

We will be filling in that side on the left with grass now. We also like not looking through stairs to our pretty scenery. Now we can just see the bay and woods.

The plan now is to change the deck and lower level of our yard. To the right of these lilies is a set of stairs off of our deck that go down the flat part of our hill (back yard). We plan to build more of those brick stairs (like in the front by the driveway) and take out the old well (purely aesthetic not functional) and build the stairs into the steep left side of the hill that will lead to another deck built into the hill that will jut out over the existing stairs that take you down to our dock. So more big changes to come next year. Stay tuned!

We also have this stone address sign that matches our house that will be getting landscape all around it next Spring.

Here's a peek at the front new pavered patio with some of my decorations for this year. I haven't put out any of my Halloween things yet, but next week I plan to give you all a full Halloween tour after we've carved our pumpkins and all the spooky goodies are out front.  Thanks for hanging in there with this long post. I was so excited to share! Blessings. xo

Happy Homemaker Monday

HHM

Good morning Friends!

Hope your weekend was wonderful and you feel refreshed and ready to begin a new week ahead. We had lots of kiddo sports this weekend, and one kiddo with a 24 hour bug that wasn't fun. So this season of germs, colds and crud begins. Yuck!  But overall it was a nice weekend to catch up with life at home as we've been out-of-town the past couple of weekends. Now on to this week!

THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS:

It's actually been a bit cooler lately, but today is mild and lovely. They say it may even hit mid 60's! Definitely go for a walk weather today.  It sounds like the rest of the week will be much cooler than that (50's and maybe even 40's) - with the end of our week getting some soaking rain.

ON THE BREAKFAST PLATE THIS MORNING:

1/2 of a cranberry english muffin (so good!) with honey pecan cream cheese and a sprinkle of cinnamon. French toast flavored coffee from my kurig.

AS I LOOK OUTSIDE MY WINDOW:

We actually just had a random cloud fly over and send a little sprinkle of rain. Still a bit cloudy. Several trees have lost their leaves already (boo!) but several are still in full color and they stand out so beautifully.  It's nice and calm today, but it was breezier this weekend and I watched many leaves fly off of our trees and I wanted to run out with my glue gun and put them right back on! Lol

RIGHT NOW I AM:

Finishing the last of my coffee and listening to classical music stream through pandora. I just finished putting together french toast casserole so it can soak all day before baking it tonight. I never got around to making it last week. I'm also working on my grocery and "to do" list for the week, and looking around my little office/craft room here and realizing how much it could use some tidying up and organization again! I have so many projects here and there that I've begun, but have yet to finish. I've been so scattered brained about that stuff lately and need to focus! It gets easier for me once I'm officially stuck indoors for the cold months.

AS I LOOK AROUND THE HOUSE:

Some dishes to finish up and of course laundry!  Not too bad otherwise.

ON TODAY'S TO DO LIST:

Finish up some cleaning this morning. I will have my MIL this afternoon and I definitely will want to go for a walk if this day is as lovely as they say. We'll go run some errands later, although I don't think I'll do my big grocery trip with her today.

CURRENTLY READING:

Still reading Lucky and enjoying more of my magazines - and even have some holiday ones and it's started my brain working on plans for gifts for the season ahead.

ON THE TV TODAY:

I have some Hallmark movies still taped to watch and a Grey's anatomy and couple episodes of The Voice. My hubby lost interest in that one so now I watch it on my own when I get a chance.  I also have some cooking shows taped.

ON THE MENU THIS WEEK:

MONDAY: french toast casserole, sausage and fruit

TUESDAY: turkey melt sandwiches & salad or soup

WEDNESDAY: pasties & leftover salad

THURSDAY: chili and corn bread

FRIDAY: leftovers

* I plan to bake an apple pie this week (it's my FIL's favorite) and make harvest loaf (a family favorite of yummy spiced pumpkin bread with mini chocolate chips and a spiced glaze). I'll share that recipe later this week.

WHAT I AM CREATING AT THE MOMENT:

I need to get my scatter brain to focus and finish some projects, however priority now to help my Mom finish the scrapbook gift she's working on for a relative.

NEW RECIPE I WANT TO TRY THIS WEEK:

Nothing really new this week - just old favorites but I will probably share cornbread and harvest loaf recipes.

TIP OF THE WEEK:

I love keeping some downy wrinkle releaser and odor control around. We're coming to the static cling time of year and this works great to give a quick spray to clothing before putting it on to stop it from clinging. It's kind of like febreeze with cling free power. Lol  I'm not getting paid or anything for this - it's just a product both my hubby and I absolutely LOVE. Plus, it works great on that piece of clothing that got wrinkled sitting in the laundry basket while waiting to be put away (thanks to my kiddos usually) and getting the wrinkles out fast. Either I spray the item and hang in closet to dry, or I spray it liberally and place in dryer for a couple of minutes.

Five on Friday: Loving the Glow

I often get sad that during this time of year the days grow shorter and the nights get longer. I embrace the glow at night and that helps.  I love that cozy feeling of the wind blowing outside and candles, or when it really gets cold - a fire, glowing in the night.  Here's some recent favorite glowing moments around my home.

ONE

Kitchen glow - I love this pumpkin on my kitchen counter with my battery candle that glows in the night as I cook.

TWO

Real candle glow - I have many battery operated candles. I do love the timer aspect of many of them so they light up each night without me even having to think about it. But there is something about the glow of a real candle in the night that really touches the soul and warms it up.

THREE

Mantle glow - in each season I love having several things that glow on or around the mantle of our fireplace in our formal living room.

FOUR

Tiny golden moments - I love the little places that are unexpected to find something glowing. Like among the teacups in my china hutch, or a tealight in the little owl, or even in a jack-o-lantern picture on the wall!

FIVE

The room glow - I love looking into a room and seeing candles and lamps glowing and filling the whole room with their warm light.

As I sip my warm tea and smell my slow cooker homemade chicken noodle soup simmer I send you cozy glowing thoughts for a wonderful weekend! I'm linking up with Amy from Love Made my Home for Five on Friday.

Slow Cooker Bacon Corn Chowder

I'm late with a post today, but for a very good reason! It's my birthday today - so I've been busy having fun. It was a great day and I had fun going shopping with my Mom and going out to lunch. I had my daughter's volleyball this evening, but we had a nice late dinner and my hubby brought me beautiful roses when he came home from work. I also received lovely cards and some things my daughter made for me. I had fun shopping and have a new purse and some lovely jewelry to show for it. ;)  I feel very blessed. Now on to today's post.

I had found this recipe for slow cooker corn chowder in a gooseberry patch cookbook and thought I'd give it a try. It was good, but I think there steps that could be taken to give it even better flavor.

First, chop up some red potatoes.

Bake up some bacon nice and crisp.

Put some frozen corn and the potatoes in the slow cooker.

Add the bacon, some dried minced onion, water, salt, pepper, garlic salt, and tumeric.

Pour in some chicken broth.

I also added some parsley.

Cook on low 8 to 9 hours until potatoes are tender.

Then add in some monterey jack shredded cheese and some evaporated milk.

The recipe didn't call for it, but I then used my immersion blender to blend up some of the soup so it still had some potato and corn bits to it, but made it a bit smoother and thicker.  You could garnish with chopped chives - I chose to add a sprinkle of cheddar french fried onion bits.

**This recipe is meant to be easy in that it uses a lot of dried ingredients that you might already have in your pantry. But I think that it would have been a more flavorful soup if I had used more fresh ingredients. I would have used fresh onion (not dried) and fried the bacon in a pan & used the drippings to cook the onion a bit before putting in the slow cooker. Also, I didn't use that great of a frozen corn. I would have used a good and more sweet corn. I also would have used fresh herbs. I liked the texture (after blending) and creaminess. You could add real milk or cream too.

Here is the recipe I have from the cookbook:

5 c. redskin potatoes, cubed
16 oz pkg frozen corn
6 slices bacon - crisply cooked & crumbled
1/4 c. dried minced onion
2  - 14 oz cans of chicken broth
1 c. water
2 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp tumeric
12 oz can evaporated milk
8 oz shredded monterey jack cheese
Optional: garnish with chopped chives

Combine all ingredients in slow cooker, except milk & cheese. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 9 hours until potatoes are tender. Stir in milk and cheese and cover until cheese melts. Garnish with chives if desired. Makes 4 to 6 servings.
